Digital skills made fun with Kezia!

On which courses are you a tutor?

I teach the Essential Digital Skills Courses, plus some great community learning workshops, both useful and fun! Visit our course page and click on Digital Skills to find out what we have to offer.

Why did you become a tutor?

I really enjoy being around people and contributing positively to people’s lives and the wider community. Technology has moved on so quickly, which has meant many people feeling left behind. At times they have missed opportunities due to a lot of services moving to online only platforms. I want to change that.

What do you think is the most interesting aspect of the courses you deliver?

Exploring the potential of technology and helping people become connected safely online and with family.

What experiences of your own do you bring to the courses?

My previous role was to source community groups who wanted to learn how to use their smart devices. The aim was to minimize digital exclusion and enhance further digital skills. My day would be full of all age groups from 6+ year olds and teenagers, right up to my oldest group aged 80+. I would teach skills such as how to switch on a smart device and make a call, to more advanced digital skill sessions on coding and website design.

What do you love about working for Somerset Skills and Learning?

The people, culture and ethos! I couldn’t have been welcomed more warmly to the company and I’m not even talking about my first day! I was warmly welcomed before my start date and had great contact with both my manager and HR dept, who helped make the process of starting my new role here so much more exciting. Since working here I really can see a common trait of professionalism, positivity and cross team collaborations, ensuring that both staff and learners receive the best possible experience.

What advice would you give to anyone considering your courses?

Digital skills can sound overwhelming, especially when we see friends and family whizzing away on their devices like there is no tomorrow. I know only too well how people who want to learn skills are shown so quickly they don’t get the chance to see how it was done. Essential Digital skills courses are all about helping you become confident to use your devices in the way you want. It may be that you are wanting to do online shopping, find information or further your career. Doing a course will provide you with the skills and confidence to become independent and stay safe whilst using your devices.

If you were stuck in a lift with someone, who would it be and why?

Maya Angelou, (I hope that’s allowed as she has sadly past away). Her books, poems and general persona is so inspiring! I would just love to be stuck in a lift with her to gain her wisdom, compassion and her downright cool, no sweat attitude.

What is your most annoying habit?

I ask lots of questions!
