Childcare

Every day is different in Childcare

Working in childcare is so varied. You could be engaging children in messy play activities one day, planning trips or making a pirate ship from a cardboard box the next!

Childcare

It’s a rewarding career as you see children develop and grow on a daily basis, and you get to make a difference.

Why should I choose Somerset Skills and Learning as my training provider?

We focus on you as an individual and create plans to ensure you can succeed. We have knowledgeable and experienced tutors that deliver interactive and varied lessons. We work flexibly to suit your needs and those of your employer. You can join at any time of the year.

What qualities do I need to succeed in childcare?

You need to be patient, caring, enthusiastic, friendly, and have great communication skills. Your reward will be seeing children’s faces light up each time they learn something.

What might be difficult for me?

You may find family commitments difficult to juggle or adjusting to your working hours and time needed to study. Our tutors are here to help you!

What support is available?

Your tutor will create an individual plan and guide you throughout your studying. We will also provide support when you complete your course regarding next steps or further qualifications and training. We can also help you with maths and English qualifications, if you need them. For more information please visit our learning support page.

What can I expect from a childcare apprenticeship?

You’ll gain all the knowledge and skills required to succeed within a childcare career, earning whilst you learn! On successful completion of the course, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification allowing you to work in any Early Years setting. Also, many apprentices are offered permanent employment with their current employer once qualified or you may be able to progress onto the next level.

What are the career pathways?

I’ve qualified – what next?

On completion of the Level 2 Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner you could seek employment as a Nursery/Pre School Assistant.

The Level 3 Early Years qualification allows you to be employed as an Early Years Practitioner, Pre School Leader, Nursery Supervisor, Deputy Manager or Childminder.

We also offer a Level 5 qualification for those who wish to pursue a career within management and higher roles within the sector.

When and where will I be learning?

Our apprenticeships run at multiple locations in Somerset.  All our apprenticeship courses are tailored to you, but a typical week is made up of one day with us studying, and four days working for your employer.
