Course overview

This course is for anyone looking to explore, build and develop practical helping and counselling skills, gain knowledge and awareness based around helping relationships such as counselling, coaching, professionally, voluntary or helping others in general.

It is for anyone looking to enhance and build skills to develop helping relationships with a genuine interest in helping others and enabling them to move forward in a positive way. This may be helping someone to overcome personal challenges, setting realistic goals, understand challenges and own barriers to achieving and encourage them to develop effective problem solving to name but a few ways, the skilled helper can help someone to move forward more positively.

This workshop is suitable for anyone who wishes to meet like-minded people to enable their own development journey and learn not only from the course content but from each other as well. You may be undertaking a counselling, coaching or similar longer course, perhaps by means of distance learning and may wish to have the opportunity to meet, discuss and learn from each other’s experiences etc. based around this course content or to attend to develop your own knowledge and skills of helping skills and relationships in general.

Within this workshop we will explore helping skills making reference to the person centred approach as well as exploring key skills to develop which are used in helping relationships for example, communication skills, including listening skills, verbal communication, questioning techniques, reframing, summarising, techniques and more. We will also explore perception, assessing thinking, and ways to help others to set realistic goals, plan, action and stay on track. This includes how to get the best out of setting realistic goals and importance of feedback. We will also explore some common scenarios, perceptions which may exist around the scenarios and some ways in which skilled helpers can help.

There are many situations in life where we find ourselves in the role of helper, whether it is at work, at home, within volunteering, with friends, family, colleagues etc. This workshop will help you to understand and develop some main skills required to help others in any helping relationship. Come along and develop and/or refresh with like-minded people interested in genuine helping relationships.

Course assessment

There are no formal assessments for this course. The tutor will give regular feedback to help you improve.

Course progression

You can progress to our next level workshops being offered by community learning based around becoming a skilled helper. The next step up is our enhancer level workshops which explore deeper to develop and build practical helping skills and knowledge. You can progress to a Level 2 accredited Counselling Course and may wish to consider subsequent courses Level 3 and above. We also offer a range of community learning courses based around health and wellbeing, employability skills, confidence building, family learning, and building and developing community.

Our workshops and courses are designed to provide essential skills, develop confidence and resilience, improve your health & wellbeing, prepare you for further learning or employment, provide ways to learn with your family and build communities. Need to know…

Entry Requirements:

This course is suitable if you wish to explore, build and develop practical skills for helping, and learn about this subject, and perhaps you don’t have relevant knowledge or experience, you should have a genuine interest in learning more about becoming a skilled helper and enhancing skills and knowledge.

You may be undertaking an accredited qualification in counselling, ie Level 2 online distance learning and may want to explore and meet like-minded people to have the opportunity to discuss helping skills and examples.

To attend this workshop you require enthusiasm and a willingness to participate and learn to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Fee information:

If you are aged 19+ AND are unemployed AND receive a benefit / your annual income is less than £25,000 per year AND live in Somerset (not including Bath & North East Somerset) AND you have lived in the UK/EU for the last 3 years OR you have refugee status / right to remain. *Please note – proof of eligibility will be requested during the enrolment process.

If you are aged 19+ AND your annual income is over £25,000 and live in Somerset OR you live in Bath & North East Somerset OR you live anywhere else in the UK. Some Community partners may not be able to accommodate learners from outside Somerset. This will be highlighted during enrolment.

Our funding rules have changed – how this affects you…
You can only enrol on ONE free* workshop/course at each level, e.g. one Taster, one Starter… and so on. Our new levels are designed to encourage you to learn and progress in your chosen area of interest. If you enrol on multiple workshops/courses at the same level, we’ll contact you to discuss (as there are exceptions), or you’ll be given the opportunity to pay for your place, (costs are detailed on each course page).
