This free course in Functional Skills English will help you improve your skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification: City & Guilds Functional Skills English at Entry Level, Level 1 or Level 2.
The course is designed to:
● Help you at work
● Refresh your skills in reading, writing and verbal communication
● Improve your chances of getting a job or changing career
● Help you with everyday activities such as writing letters and helping your children with their school work
● Build your confidence
● Develop your English skills to enable you to progress onto other courses like GCSEs
The course will cover a range of topics including punctuation, spelling, grammar, reading, speaking and listening strategies. Functional Skills English is about using English in the real world, so these topics will be put into an everyday, practical context so that you can demonstrate that you can use your knowledge outside of the course.

Monday 6-8pm - Frome
Monday 6-8pm - Taunton
Tuesday 10am-12pm - Online
Wednesday 6-8pm - Bridgwater
Wednesday 6-8pm - Yeovil
There will be a mixture of work as a whole class, small group work and directed self-study to meet your needs.
Our expert tutors will work with you to build a course and resources to suit your learning style and help steer you towards achieving your goal and qualification. The duration of your course will vary depending on level and learning required, but the average course will last between four and six months.
Practising what you have learnt during your lessons will improve your chances of success. Your tutor will give you homework on a regular basis and will recommend books and free online resources so that you can study independently.
At the end of the course you will take exams in reading and writing. There will also be a speaking and listening assessment.
On completion of this course, previous students have progressed on to a Maths course, moved on to GCSE English Language or enrolled on a course to improve their computer skills.
No formal qualifications or experience are required for this course. There will be an initial assessment to decide which level is best for you.
Eligibility criteria applies. Courses will run subject to enrolments and funding.
If you are living in a devolved area, you will not be eligible for funding for this course.
You will need to meet minimum requirements on your initial assessments to be eligible for this course.
To be eligible for government subsidised fees for this course, you must:
● be aged 19 or over as at 31 August 2023
● have lived in the UK/EEA for the last 3 years
● currently reside in England
● You do not currently have a 9 – 4 (A* - C) in GCSE English
● You do not have a Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in English
