Course overview

This course is for anyone wishing to gain their Functional Skills Maths qualification, who may have struggled to do so in a traditional school or college setting.

Upon entry, you will be required to complete a BKSB assessment to determine where your current knowledge. This is not something to study for, nor to be concerned about; it is to inform our experienced and friendly tutors of the gaps in your maths understanding so they can better support you on your learning journey. You will be given a study pack during your first session, this includes handy revision guides, an exam-focused home study book and stationery: all designed to enable you to feel confident as you work towards the final assessment.

Functional Skills Maths works on a 4-week basis. In week 4, you will have a 1-1 meeting with your tutor to discuss your progress and to see if you are ready to sit your exam. If you are not, don’t fret! You and your tutor will discuss your next steps going forward.

The sessions will run for 2 hours every week, with 1 hours’ worth of revision/homework provided, as well as being sign posted to other support materials should you wish to access them.

What to Expect:

• Small group sessions: Returning to a classroom situation can understandably create feelings of anxiety. All our functional skills tutors understand this and are experts at helping you, whatever your needs. We therefore keep these groups small, often less than 5 students at a time.

• Focused homework related to your targets: Your tutor will take the time to get to know you and your learning style. This means that they can pinpoint the gaps in your understanding and focus your study outside of the classroom to help you gain confidence and be ready when exam time comes around.

• Extra support to gain your qualification: Wondering what else is on offer? We have small, topic-based sessions online every week, as well as the opportunity to book weekly 1 -1 sessions with tutors, who can devote extra time to helping you get ready for the final assessment.

You should do this course if you wish to gain a Functional Skills maths qualification. This qualification can help you with employment opportunities, promotion opportunities, career changes and in everyday life or even to simply say “I did that!”

Course assessment

There is a final, external assessment at the end of the course. Your tutor will advise you on the best time to take this to enhance your chances of being successful.
