What is a traineeship?

A traineeship is a course with work experience that gets you ready for work, an apprenticeship or further study, and it typically lasts between six weeks and six months. You can start a traineeship at any time during the year. And we now have an exciting new path for SS&L trainees, with our unique, specialist offer and the chance to earn whilst you gain work experience. Our traineeships are available across Somerset and Wiltshire.

Who is a traineeship for?

A traineeship is for people aged 16-24** who work less than 16 hours a week (or are unemployed) with little or no work experience, who hold no qualifications or are qualified to level 3 or below. Plus, if you’re aged between 16 and 18 years old, and start a traineeship with us before 31 December 2020 you can now earn up to £500, depending on household income.

Why are our traineeships different?

Our traineeships cover seven specialist work sectors, plus we can tailor a traineeship to suit you in an alternative area of work, for example if you want to train as a mechanic, an electrician, work with animals, learn floristry or something else. Check out the individual traineeships below…

What does it cover?

You’ll get help with achieving Maths and English qualifications – if you need them. We tailor the qualifications to your needs and you‘ll also get the chance to gain certificates relevant to your work area. You’ll get exposure to the world of work to improve your employability through gaining knowledge, skills, experience and confidence. We provide a supportive and safe work experience placement where you can develop the behaviours needed to succeed in the workplace.

How do I get a work placement?

We can match you to one of our vacancies or help you to contact local employers. We have had trainees in construction, care, animal care, childcare, car mechanics, hairdressing and many more! We will help you find the right placement, whether it be as part of one of our sector specific traineeships or a traineeship tailored for your dream career.

Why should I choose SS&L as my training provider?

Our traineeship team is very experienced and knowledgeable, having supported over 600 trainees since traineeships began in 2013.

As your training provider you’ll find us different to school or college. We have local, friendly centres and our tutors are dedicated to helping you achieve the best you can. Our small class sizes make us an ideal choice if you’d prefer to have some one-to-one tutor support. Teaching is mostly face to face, but will also include some online delivery (blended learning). We’ll also keep in touch for six months after your traineeship has finished, to offer help if you need it.

And that’s not all! Our trainees have won Traineeship of the Year at the Grow Somerset Talent awards for the past 5 years, proving that you can succeed and achieve with Somerset Skills & Learning.

When and where will I be learning?

SS&L traineeships run at multiple locations in Somerset, plus Trowbridge and Salisbury in Wiltshire. All of our traineeship courses are tailored to you, but a typical trainee week is made up of one day a week with us working on qualifications and skills, plus two to four days a week at your work placement.

What do I get when I complete the course?

You’ll get qualifications in the subject sector you choose and in digital skills, English & maths – if you didn’t have them before. You’ll also gain contacts for references, and a certificate upon completion. Plus, depending on how you get on with your placement, you may get an interview with the company for an apprenticeship or a job role if they have vacancies. Once you have completed your traineeship, we are here to support you with your next step.

What can a traineeship lead to?

SS&L traineeships are a great way to get into the world of work. Many of our trainees go on to become apprentices, others are now in full time work and enjoying the benefits of working life, and some have gone on to further study. Whatever your goals, contact us to start your traineeship journey.
