Success Story

Ilze Babbage

“I wanted to work in admin but didn’t have enough qualifications or experience. I thought apprenticeships were just for young people, but they’re not. I would recommend apprenticeships, as you learn about the job as you go and you will know if you are going to like it as a career.”

George Hayward

Apprentice Teaching Assistant
(Trinity First School, Frome 2019)

Ilze is 34 years old and moved to England from Latvia in 2005. She has two children, aged 2 and 5.

Before having children, Ilze worked in catering and then decided she wanted to work in admin, but didn’t have enough qualifications or experience.

She assumed apprenticeships were for young people. However, Ilze started her Level 2 business admin apprenticeship in April 2018 and is nearly finished.  She would like to progress to do Level 3 and has been offered a full time position at Danesfield from September 2019.

She is now working at Danesfield Middle School in Williton and her husband is in the army. This type of work suits her as she needs to work around childcare, school hours and school holidays.

Ilze is so glad she has done this as she wanted to improve herself and has gained on the job experience and learning. She has found SS&L great, with a really helpful tutor, who is easy to contact. Everyone is really friendly and there is a good mix of ages on the course.

Her favourite thing of working in the school is that no day is the same. It is never boring and she learns new things every day.

Ilze would recommend apprenticeships. She has been to uni in Latvia, but with an apprenticeship you learn about the job as you go and you will know if you are going to like it as a career.
