Hiring an Early Years Apprentice: A Guide for Employers

For Early Years settings across the South West, the months leading up to September can feel like a race against the clock – planning ahead while keeping up with the daily demands of a busy nursery, or preschool.

Whether you’re thinking about growing your team or simply need some extra support, an apprentice could be a valuable and realistic option, in terms of staffing and budget.

At SS&L, we work closely with Early Years employers across Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Wiltshire. We know how challenging it can be to balance quality care with tight resources, and how important it is to find the right people at the right time.

Why consider an apprentice now?

Staffing pressures are real, and finding experienced practitioners isn’t always easy, or affordable!

Hiring an apprentice gives you:

  • An extra pair of hands to support the team
  • The chance to shape a future practitioner around your setting’s values, or to invest in an existing staff member, giving them skills to help your setting grow
  • A cost-effective way to invest in your team without the cost of a fully qualified practitioner

Most importantly, apprentices are keen to learn and make a difference. With the right support, they can grow into confident and skilled members of your team!

Can an apprentice be counted in ratios?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from employers. The short answer is yes, although only under specific conditions. We’ll talk you through this and make sure you’re getting it right.

“She’s already having such a positive impact”

An Apprentices contribution can be significant from the start.

Take Izzy, a Level 2 Early Years Practitioner Apprentice and SS&L’s Apprentice of the Month in February 2025. Staff at Brock House Day Nursery in Taunton were impressed by her work ethic and attitude since joining the team.

“Izzy is starting to take on more responsibilities with the children, proving herself highly deserving of this recognition. Several of the children are very fond of her.”
Deanna Hunt, Nursery Director

Stories like Izzy’s are common. Apprentices bring enthusiasm, a fresh energy and quickly become part of the team.

What about cost and funding?

We understand that cost is a key concern for many Early Years employers.

The good news is:

  • Apprentices are typically paid the Apprenticeship Minimum Wage, which is lower than that of a qualified staff member
  • Training costs are often fully funded for small employers
  • Our recruitment service is free

We’ll talk you through everything you’re eligible for and what to expect financially, so there are no surprises!
