Course Overview

Take your first step towards a rewarding career in education with our Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STLS). This nationally recognised qualification is ideal if you work in a classroom or learning support role for at least 10 hours per week, whether paid or voluntary.

The course runs in online evening sessions, and will help you build essential skills in child development, health and safety, building relationships, and supporting pupils’ learning. With this knowledge, you’ll grow in confidence and be able to demonstrate your competence to employers, opening doors to roles such as teaching assistant, learning support assistant, or SEN assistant.

Fee Information

Cost: £0 – £1296 

This course can be fully funded (FREE) for people aged 19 or over who:

  • live in Somerset (not including Bath & North-East Somerset/North Somerset) or Dorset
  • have lived in the UK/EU for the last 3 years or have leave to remain
  • meet at least one of the following:
    • are employed with an annual income of less than £25,000
    • are unemployed AND in receipt of benefits.
    • have no qualifications of level 2 or above

Proof of eligibility will be requested.

Entry Requirements

To study for this qualification, you will need to be working or volunteering in a School as a Teaching Assistant for at least 10+ hours.

You should ideally have the equivalent of Level 1 literacy skills, however, a formal qualification is not required as this will be assessed prior to starting the course.

You will need access to the internet and a computer/laptop to complete the coursework.

Assessment

To complete this qualification, you must achieve 30 credits in total from a combination of mandatory and optional units. The mandatory units cover general aspects of school and classroom support, you can then choose specific optional units that match your particular work role or school environment.

As this is a competence qualification you will need the support of an employer. Learning will be varied and will include workplace learning and training workshops run by our expert tutors with PowerPoints, videos, tutor-led group discussions and group work so you will get to meet other people on a similar journey to you.

Your tutor will regularly visit the workplace to observe you carrying out the job to complete the competence element and to give you training and feedback. A e-portfolio will be used for collection and submission of evidence.

Progression

On achievement of this qualification, you will gain access to further learning, including the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools.
