Does the thought of working out a maths problem cause your mind to go blank, do you feel uncomfortable, helpless or panicked? If so, you may be experiencing maths anxiety or fear of maths – a common negative emotional reaction to maths.
The good news is you can do it – it’s just a matter of finding the right way for you and that’s what we’re here to help you do!
What is maths anxiety?
Maths anxiety is a negative emotional reaction to maths. It’s not linked to your intelligence or ability – in fact, anxiety can mask your real ability. A fear of numbers can lead to you avoiding everyday situations, and cause increased anxiety due to:
- being under pressure and scared of being judged on how quickly you can produce an answer
- negative experiences in the past, eg made to feel you’re not good enough for getting something wrong in school or work
- being scared you’ll get it wrong or just don’t know
Anxiety can create a cycle of avoiding maths, losing confidence and skills, so avoiding numbers even more. Does this sound like you?
