A new Supported Internship is launching in Exmoor

We’re excited to be launching a new Supported Internship in Exmoor, creating new opportunities for young people with SEND to move towards employment with the right support around them.

The programme is delivered by SS&L in partnership with Young Somerset, local employers, and Somerset Council’s Imagine the Possibilities initiative.

Together, we’re helping young people aged 16-14 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) gain real workplace experience across the Exmoor area, while building the skills and confience they need for the future.

A pathway into work

Supported Internships are designed for young people who want to work but may need some additional support to get there.

This full-time programme combines real work experience with structured learning and personalised support.

Interns spend four days a week in a work placement with local employers in Exmoor, and one day a week learning with SS&L in West Somerset. During this time, they build practical skills, grow in confidence and gain experience of what working life is really like.

The aim is simple: to help young people take their next step towards paid employment or an apprenticeship.

What Interns will learn

Alongside hands-on experience in the workplace, interns will develop:

  • Practical skills linked to land-based, digital or creative roles
  • Core employment skills for the workplace
  • CV writing and interview preparation
  • An understanding of workplace rights
  • Confidence and independence

Every young person receives support tailored to their needs, helping them develop the skills and belief they need to move forward.

Working with employers across Exmoor

Local employers are at the heart of this programme.

By offering supported placements, businesses can help young people gain valuable experience while building a more inclusive workforce. SS&L and Young Somerset work closely with employers throughout the programme, providing guidance and practical support to help placements succeed.
