
Introducing Our New Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship
We’re passionate about supporting education professionals to grow and thrive in their careers. That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of the Level 5 Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship, starting in May 2025!
Developed with school sector experts and the Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), this brand-new apprenticeship is designed to help education support staff develop specialist skills and progress their careers.
As a key contributor to the trailblazer group, SS&L played a vital role in developing this apprenticeship to ensure it meets the needs of both employers and learners.
What is the Specialist Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship?
This Level 5 apprenticeship is a fantastic progression route for those currently working in education and looking to take the next step in their careers. Equivalent to a foundation degree, this higher level apprenticeship offers a blend of practical experience and specialist training. Whether you work in a primary school, secondary school, college or alternative education setting, this course will provide you with relevant knowledge and skills to support learners effectively.
Apprentices will develop expertise in one of three key areas:
- SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) – Help learners with SEND thrive by implementing policies and tailored support strategies.
- Social & Emotional Wellbeing – Focus on learners’ emotional development, supporting their mental wellbeing and resilience.
- Curriculum Provision – Specialise in a subject or learning approach, such as early reading and maths interventions, English as an Additional Language (EAL), or Forest School.

- Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs)
- SEND teaching assistants
- Learning mentors
- Social & emotional wellbeing support staff
- Subject specialist teaching assistants (Drama, PE, Music, etc.)
