Brand New Courses & Workshops

🌸 Although it feels like it’s taken forever to get here, last weekend Somerset officially hit 10 hours of sunlight a day! Rain levels are finally starting to drop, and nature is coming out of hibernation 🌞

Spring is the perfect time to start something new! Whether that’s getting creative with Art For Everyone, or spending time together as a family at Family Nature Crafts or Makaton for Beginners.

Featured Courses

Art for Everyone

If you’re interested in making art but not sure where to start, this course is for you! Build confidence with drawing and painting, make mistakes without judgement, and develop your own style.

Each week you’ll be given lots of practical guidance and fun exercises to get you started. Experiment with different techniques and mediums to get a feel of what you like best.

With support from your expert tutor and creative classmates, build confidence and release your inner artist. As you learn, you’ll build connections, make friends, and take your first steps into creating your own community of artists!

Family Nature Crafts

Spend some time together as a family building a seasonal sketchbook this Spring using natural materials found outside. This class allows you the chance to slow down and connect with nature together!

Weather permitting, we will take a short nature walk outside to collect materials to add to our sketchbooks. Please feel free to bring your own from home, such as leaves, photographs, drawings etc.

The purpose of this class is to allow all ages a chance to slow down and connect with nature. You can keep a record of the emerging spring season as it unfurls in your journal, which you can take home to look back on as the seasons change.

Makaton for Beginners

Designed for anyone who is new to the world of communicating using sign language. You’ll be introduced to Makaton and learn how it can be used in everyday life.

Popularised by Mr Tumble on Cbeebies’ Something Special, Makaton can support everyone with comprehension and expression. It is particularly useful for anyone who struggles with spoken communication, and for toddlers and babies still learning to talk.

During each session you will learn a new set of signs that you can take away and practise. The course will be run over 4 sessions in a friendly and supportive group setting. All you need to bring with you is a willingness to have fun and get involved!

Cooking and Baking with Confidence

Our sell-out beginner cooking class is back! We want to help more of you with basic cooking skills, techniques, and knowledge to get you kitchen confident!

Each week you’ll learn new skills you can use in your own kitchen right away and start cooking healthy meals for you and your family! Learn how to prep your food safely, how to fry, simmer, and bake your meals, and understand what a balanced diet looks like. You’ll also learn how to plan healthy meals to cook and eat within a budget.

No experience necessary – this course is for complete beginners. All you need is an interest in food and willingness to learn!

Receiving a diagnosis for Autism or ADHD can be life-changing – finally having some answers for why you think or behave differently to those around you and the validation that you’re not just “making a fuss”.  Especially for late-diagnosed individuals, it can make a lot of things suddenly make a lot of sense!

Getting that diagnosis isn’t easy though, with NHS waiting times varying across the country from a few weeks to up to a decade! This means some people can go years without support and feel increasingly isolated. Even once a diagnosis has been made, there are few resources available aside from some generic tips found online.

That’s where SS&L’s Neurodivergent provision comes in! With a range of courses available both in-person and online offering support, information, and community to anyone awaiting diagnosis, recently diagnosed, or looking to support a friend or family member.

The Neurodivergent Journal course is available both in-person at our Frome centre and online for neurodivergent adults (diagnosed, self-diagnosed, or pending diagnosis!) to come together, learn from each other, and get to know themselves better in the process.

Our Understanding Neurodiversity courses focus on exploring what it means to be neurodivergent, including key behaviours and characteristics, links to neurodiversity and mental health, and understanding stigma and misconceptions.  You’ll gain valuable insight if you’re looking to learn for yourself or to support your child or someone you care about.

Is your child showing signs of neurodiversity? Then Supporting My Child’s Wellbeing Through Creativity may be beneficial in supporting your child to communicate effectively, particularly if they struggle with traditional communication methods, emotional dysregulation, or anxiety.
