Learning at Work Week: SS&L Career Change Success Stories
Happy Learning at Work Week 2025! This year’s theme is ‘Get connected’ – and to ‘connect and inspire’, we’re taking a look at some SS&L career change success stories. Have a read and see how we can help change your life through learning.
Rebecca’s Early Years Apprenticeship Achievement
Early Years Practitioner Rebecca made the ‘scary decision’ to change her career path in 2023. She moved on from her plans to become a vet to complete an apprenticeship at one of our Little Discoveries nurseries.
“I took a bit of a jump as I was really struggling to find an apprenticeship in the veterinary world,” she said.
Rebecca always enjoyed being around children. She decided the Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship would help her gain the experience needed to change careers whilst still earning a salary.
“It was a massive career change – such a scary decision to make, to go from one thing and completely into another.
“I love children and wanted to learn how to provide the best care possible. I chose SS&L because the process was simple and very welcoming.

Donna’s Short Course Success Story
SS&L graduate Donna previously worked with horses before she completed a total of five short courses with SS&L, all covering autism, ADHD, or dyslexia. She then went on to complete a work-based learning course with us, the Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Autism.
“I chose these courses not only to get a better understanding for myself and my daughter who has been diagnosed with autism, but to get further training for my career,” Donna said.
“As well as gaining a qualification to support my career goals, I have learned a lot from hearing other people’s experiences and getting a fuller understanding of neurodiversity through the community learning courses that I have done.”
As a result of her new experience and skills, Donna has successfully changed her career to work in a Neurodiversity and Mental Health role with the NHS.
“These courses have been invaluable to support me in this role and gaining a career in this sector. Now I can work towards a career that I am interested in and feel passionate about.”

From Finance to Front of the Classroom: Louise’s Story
Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprentice Louise was recently offered a permanent position at her placement as a result of her commitment during her SS&L apprenticeship.
Louise, a dedicated single parent who had been working in retail and finance, decided a career in teaching was her calling. She signed up for a Schools apprenticeship with SS&L so that she could learn on the job and continue earning.
She’s now part of the team at St John’s C of E First School in Frome, and is a valued member of the school community.
“This career path is definitely the best,” Louise said.
“My favourite part about working at St John’s is the team and the children, no day is the same!
“I enjoy having new tasks to do with the children and watching them learn.”
