The Power of Apprentices: Helping Nurseries Shine

At Little Discoveries, Nunney, apprentices play an important part in creating a supportive, inspiring and engaging environment for children. When Ofsted visited the nursery last year, they saw a team working closely together to support every child. The Outstanding rating reflected not only the hard work of experienced staff, but also the valuable contribution apprentices make each day.

🌱 Learning, Growing and Contributing

Apprentices bring curiosity, commitment and a willingness to learn. By working directly with children and receiving guidance from more experienced colleagues, they build skills that quickly strengthen the setting. The combination of practical experience and structured training helps apprentices develop confidence and a clear understanding of what high quality Early Years practice looks like.

During the Ofsted visit, apprentice Izzy contributed to the inspection day and demonstrated the professional approach she has developed throughout her training. Her involvement highlighted the wider value apprentices bring to Little Discoveries. They support routines, respond to children’s interests, help create purposeful learning opportunities and contribute to the positive atmosphere families associate with the nursery.

📈 Supporting Long-Term Growth

Apprentices also support the long-term growth of the team. As they progress, they build knowledge that enhances consistency and strengthens the quality of provision. Many continue their training and develop into confident practitioners who bring fresh ideas and a strong understanding of the children they work with.

The nursery’s Outstanding rating reflects its dedication not only to children, but also to the growth and wellbeing of its team. By investing in apprenticeships, Little Discoveries is able to nurture talent from within, supporting people like Izzy to develop and progress.

“Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to grow our own talent,” explains Sara Fennelly, Early Years Academy Manager at SS&L. “They give people the opportunity to earn, learn and make a real difference, and they give settings like Little Discoveries the chance to nurture staff who share their values from the very start.”

🏆 A Commitment to Excellence

Little Discoveries remains committed to investing in apprenticeships. Apprenticeships contribute to a strong and motivated team, and children benefit from adults who are engaged, reflective and keen to develop their skills.

🚀 The Bigger Picture

Izzy’s story shows how powerful apprenticeships can be in strengthening Somerset’s Early Years sector. Apprenticeships can create sustainable pathways for nurseries and preschools to build skilled, passionate teams – ensuring children and families receive the outstanding care they deserve.

Whether you’re an Early Years setting looking to grow your own team, or someone considering a rewarding career in childcare, apprenticeships offer a pathway filled with opportunity, development and real impact.
