Want to develop your counselling skills to support others? This course helps you build confidence in using counselling techniques, whether for work or personal growth. You’ll explore key approaches, ethical considerations, and the importance of self-development – helping you communicate more effectively and offer support in a professional or everyday setting.
Study at your own pace with expert guidance and gain a recognised qualification. This course won’t qualify you as a counsellor, but it’s a great first step towards further training or enhancing your existing skills.
The objectives are to help learners to:
- Develop counselling skills
- Understand the different approaches involved in the use of counselling skills
- Appreciate the importance of self-development
You will have the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately.

This course can be fully funded (FREE) for people aged 19 or over who:
- live in Somerset (not including Bath & North-East Somerset/North Somerset) or Dorset
- have lived in the UK/EU for the last 3 years or have leave to remain
- meet at least one of the following:

- are employed with an annual income of less than £25,000
- are unemployed AND in receipt of benefits.
- have no qualifications of level 2 or above
Proof of eligibility will be requested.
Entry Requirements
You do not need any formal qualifications to join the course, however you may find it helpful if you’ve already achieved a Level 1 qualification. This programme allows for learner self-study and leads to a formal qualification. If required you will need to attend any 121 support tutorials organised with your personal tutor, where progress updates can be discussed. Your tutor will agree coursework submission deadlines for assessment and feedback with you. The course can take up to 6 months to complete.
Assessment
To be awarded the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, learners are required to successfully complete 4 mandatory units:
– Unit 01 – Using counselling skills
– Unit 02 – Introduction to counselling skills theories
– Unit 03 – Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
– Unit 04 – Counselling skills and personal development
This qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor.
Progression
At the end of the course, you will discuss future options with your tutor. You may choose to continue to enhance your CV through further work based learning opportunities, or more of SS&L’s wide variety of adult courses. Your tutor will also signpost you to other courses available within SS&L or with external organisations.
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to the following:
– Level 3 Award in Counselling Skills and Theory
– Level 3 Diploma in Counselling Skills.
